Rugby Union SA AGM Reflects on Growth, Loss, and Strategic Future
Rugby Union South Australia (RUSA) held its Annual General Meeting this week, bringing together members of the rugby community to reflect on a year of both progress and poignant moments.
Before proceedings commenced, a heartfelt tribute was paid to Ted Fidock, a cherished figure within South Australian rugby. Ted, a dedicated supporter of Brighton Rugby Club and a familiar presence at AGMs, was remembered as a passionate stalwart whose absence was deeply felt across the room and the wider rugby community.
Financial Transparency and Performance
RUSA reaffirmed its commitment to sound financial governance, with accounts for the year ending 31 December 2024 officially audited and signed off by PERKS Audit. Special thanks were extended to Rose Jackson, Carl Jones, and the Finance Committee for their ongoing oversight and diligence throughout the year.
The organisation closed the financial year with a $45,167 deficit, reflecting key strategic investments made to prepare for future growth. These included:
- A $35,000 investment in the Men’s and Women’s Black Falcons programs to ensure competitiveness at the national level
- Targeted funding toward professional consultancy services to maximise opportunities from the upcoming 2025 British & Irish Lions tour
Offsetting these investments was a positive uplift in revenue:
- Rugby Australia grant funding increased by $47,000
- South Australian Government grants provided $23,000
- The launch of the “Friends of Rugby” fundraising initiative raised a strong $30,000, in support of tour preparations
Strategic Progress and Participation
RUSA reported successful execution of key pillars from its Strategic Plan in 2024, with notable progress in:
- Girls Development programs
- Player Pathways
- Coach Development initiatives
While overall participation levels have stabilised, the year delivered a 3% increase in club player registrations, signaling renewed grassroots momentum. Looking ahead, a refined strategic focus for 2025 will centre on five key deliverables, which will be monitored and reported monthly to drive outcomes and transparency.
Leadership and Recognition
Fraser Stroud was elected to the Board, joining Graeme Gibson, who was reappointed for another term. The meeting also formally acknowledged and thanked Carl Jones for his many years of dedicated service to Rugby Union SA.
Reflecting on his first year as President, David Pyper shared insights from travelling across the state:
“I had the privilege of meeting players, partners, officials, spectators and administrators at clubs right across South Australia. These conversations gave me a deeper understanding of the heart and soul of our sport. Your feedback has been invaluable and will continue to guide us as we move forward.”
Season Ahead and Lions on the Horizon
With the 2025 season already underway, the President praised the exciting contests already played, while also encouraging the rugby community to rally around clubs facing challenges in fielding teams.
“We need you in the competition. Let’s make sure every club feels supported and valued,” he said.
Looking ahead to July, anticipation is building for the British & Irish Lions Tour, which will bring world-class rugby to Adelaide.
“This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will showcase the very best of our rugby community. We’re excited to be on the doorstep of history,” the President added.
The meeting concluded with gratitude for the Board and RUSA staff, whose dedication continues to drive the game forward.
“With strong leadership and a united community, the future of rugby in South Australia is in good hands.”
