Youth Girls Program

Rugby Union SA has adapted Rugby Australia's program Rugby Her Way for the 2026 U16s Youth Girls, an initiative aimed at growing and supporting girls’ participation in rugby across South Australia.

The program bridges the gap between mixed-gender junior rugby and women’s rugby, helping girls stay engaged in the game during key dropout years.

Rugby Her Way provides clear and inclusive pathways for girls aged 14-16, creating opportunities to learn the game in a safe, welcoming, and age-appropriate environment. The program is designed to build confidence, develop skills, and foster lifelong friendships, while removing many of the barriers that traditionally prevent girls from staying involved in sport.

With a strong focus on community, Rugby Her Way also supports the development of female coaches and volunteers, strengthening local clubs and ensuring sustainable growth of the women’s game.

The competition encourages local rugby clubs to form teams, building sustainable female pathways within clubs while strengthening community connection.

Rugby experience is not required to take part, and all abilities are welcome. Families interested in learning more are encouraged to connect with Rugby Union SA or their local rugby club to find out how to get involved.

Program FAQs

Do I need experience to attend?

No, this program is for players who are new to the game, who have been playing rugby for under a year OR who are currently playing non-contact rugby.

Do I need to join a club?

You’ll need to join a club but don’t worry it’s super easy! Scan the QR Code in the above graphic to find your closest club.

Are there any training sessions?

Yes! There will be dedicated training sessions for the first 8 weeks. To continue into the Youth Girls Program, participants will need an active registration with one of our local clubs.

How much does the program cost?

The Rugby, Her Way program will cost $10 per participant.

For those who progress into U16s Youth Girls Competition, individuals will need to pay additional State and Association costs.

Is Rugby, Her Way a contact sport?

Yes! Girls will focus on developing the basics of landing safely, tackle, ball into contact and how to warm up the body for contact. The idea is to bring girls of similar abilities together and give them the time and space to learn, practice and develop their skills through a range of activities.

Will I get hurt?

While Rugby is a physical sport and injuries can happen, the contact part of the game is what a lot of players enjoy the most. We take player safety very seriously and there are rules and regulations in place to make sure you’re protected on the field. Plus your coach will teach you how to tackle safely and the skills needed in contact to give you the confidence to enjoy playing Rugby.

What do I need to bring?

Wear your comfy clothes or sportswear ready to move, a water bottle and a smile! Mouthguards are preferred but not mandatory. We also encourage participants to wear Rugby Boots through training and game scenarios.
