In a groundbreaking move for women’s rugby in South Australia, Rugby SA has announced the launch of dedicated U14 and U17 Youth Girls competitions in 2025. This initiative, part of a Rugby Australia pilot program, will provide girls with greater opportunities to develop their skills, compete at a higher level, and stay engaged in the sport longer.
The introduction of these age-specific competitions marks a significant step forward in addressing the participation gap for young female players. Historically, many girls have had limited pathways after playing in mixed-gender junior competitions. By establishing separate U14 (ages 12-14) and U17 (ages 15-17) divisions, Rugby SA aims to create a structured, supportive environment tailored to their development.
“This is a major milestone for rugby in South Australia,” said Rob Sadler. “For years, we’ve seen talented young girls step away from the sport due to a lack of dedicated competition. This program ensures they have a clear and exciting pathway to continue playing, improving, and achieving success.”
- Dedicated U14 & U17 age groups to support player development.
- Female-led coaching and mentoring to foster leadership within the sport.
- New players welcomed and supported—each girl will be buddied up with a current female player at their closest club, ensuring a smooth transition into the rugby community.
- Games scheduled on Sundays, played alongside the Crippled Crows, providing a flexible opportunity for girls to also compete in existing Saturday competitions.
Beyond the competition, Rugby SA is committed to developing the sport at all levels. A strong focus will be placed on coaching development, with multiple female coaches currently working towards their Level 3 accreditation. Additionally, referees will receive ongoing support and training to ensure a high standard of officiating within the new competitions.
The Girls and Women’s Academy will also play a pivotal role in talent development. Through Get Into Rugby Schools programs and club-based training, more young girls will be introduced to rugby, ensuring a sustainable growth model for future seasons.
The 2025 Youth Girls Competition is open to all female players aged 12-17. Whether you’re a seasoned player or completely new to the game, there’s a place for you in South Australia’s expanding rugby community!
