RugbySA is committed to improving the rugby experience for all participants in our game, be that players, match officials or spectators. In this regard, we are taking the opportunity to address some key areas of concern regarding in-game player discipline, sideline behaviour and post-match interactions across our senior competitions.

In Season 2026, RugbySA has identified an increase in:

  • Aggressive behaviour between players resulting in red cards;
  • Repeated team infringements leading to yellow cards;
  • Dangerous and high tackles resulting in sanctions;
  • Poor sideline conduct, including overcrowded technical zones and
  • Inappropriate commentary directed toward both Players and Match Officials both during and after the match.

This behaviour is counterintuitive to the aims of rugby and prevents participants from taking part in a flowing and enjoyable sporting contest. Furthermore, it is not in line with the values of our game and is having a direct impact on the playing experience, the enjoyment of spectators, and the ability of Match Officials to manage games effectively and safely.

We would therefore like to ask you, our Coaches, team managers, club officials and senior players to assist us in upholding not only the laws of the game, but the values we wish to demonstrate as a community. You can assist us in this by reminding your players and club members of the following:

  • Referee directions are to be adhered to in all matches. Yellow and red cards are used as tools by the referees to ensure compliance, and repeated non-compliance will result in the referee using the tools at their disposal to control the match safely and effectively.
  • Technical zones are to remain controlled and limited to approved personnel only.
  • Abuse, intimidation or ongoing commentary directed at Match Officials will not be tolerated.

This includes such behavior being demonstrated at the conclusion of matches. Any such behavior from players or spectators will be sanctioned, with Code of Conduct proceedings against individuals or Strikes being issued against clubs.

These key areas of focus will be closely monitored over the coming rounds of competition. If these trends continue, there is a risk that stricter sanctions and an increased use of yellow and red cards will follow. Clubs should understand that continued poor discipline will ultimately disadvantage their own teams through suspensions, reduced player availability and disrupted match performance.

We ask all clubs to address these concerns internally with coaches, players and support staff immediately ahead of upcoming rounds. With your support we can ensure that we can deliver a strong and competitive season in 2026.

We will continue to work closely with both our clubs and our match officials over the coming months and welcome any discussion on ways we can advance our game to being a leader in respect and competitive integrity.
