Adelaide Uni Rugby counts itself lucky to have volunteers like David Clark.

David is a member of the Sharks, Adelaide University Rugby’s LGBTQI+ team. That team has brought close to a hundred new players to rugby in the last 5 years; naturally, Adelaide University Rugby was very proud to offer a safe space for those new players but what wasn’t anticipated is what an amazing group of volunteers they’d also be – and David is one of the very best.

David is invaluable in managing our social media and running big events like the Adelaide University Rugby Drag Race and the Sharks Quiz night, both of which he (or his alter-ego Cleo) does like a paid professional. He takes an active role in recruitment, fundraising and planning, is a senior player in the Sharks, and has at times been their manager and assistant-coach. He was also a much-loved coach of a junior team, and we hope to see him back in that role in future years.

In addition to David just being worth his weight in gold (black gold, Texas tea…), we are grateful to have him flying the rainbow flag in the volunteer arena. Representation is just as important in volunteer roles as it is on the field. It tells LGBTQIA+ people that they are an intrinsic part of the club, not just a side-hustle. Just as importantly, it provides a healthy, happy illustration of a truly inclusive community. Every night that David coached the kids, just by being himself he normalized being a proud part of the rainbow community. On multiple occasions when kids were being bullied, questioning, or coming out, our junior parents were able to point to the example of David to reassure them that there’s nothing wrong with being who they are and that homophobia is cruel and wrong, and that whoever they are they can feel safe knowing they will be loved and accepted at their rugby club.

David – we love you!
