It is with great sadness that we share the news that Denzil Church passed away overnight. Our thoughts, love and condolences go out to his family, and particularly to his daughter Maddie, of whom he was so very proud.

Denzil joined OC in 1978; he had celebrated 40 years with OC. He played in all grades (including Golden Oldies), variously as a winger, fullback, 5/8, and flanker.

Denzil had held a number of roles at the club over the years, including Social Director, Barman, Secretary, and House & Grounds manager, Women’s team coach, and team manager of various grades. Denzil was the President of the club in 1998 when OC won the premierships in 1st XV, Women’s, and U16s.

Denzil won a number of the club’s awards, including Best Club Supporter and Best Clubman (twice!), and many playing awards. He also won Best First Year Player in 1978, having come across from Aussie Rules to give rugby a go. He never looked back, and often lamented that he had not found rugby sooner.

Denzil remained very much a cheerful and active part of our community, and loved the hours spent leaning on the balcony at Tregenza with the “Heavies”, talking of life, laughs and rugby.

Denzil will be missed as if he had been part of our family – and indeed, he was.Vale, Mr Church

The funeral for Denzil Church will be held atAll Souls Anglican Church, St Peters (cnr 3rd Ave and Stephen Tce), Tuesday 27th November at 2.30pm. A wake following the service is to be held at Old Collegians RUFC, Tregenza Oval Linden Park.

All welcome.
